My Mom’s China

If you saw my Easter post, you saw my lovely pink, gray, and white china with gold trim.  This is actually my mother’s china and I assume it was her wedding china.

While I was growing up, this china was in the glass hutch in our dining room.  While preparing for Easter, I ran across it and really looked at it for the first time.  It has a lovely, understated elegance that is very retro cool.  I love the symmetrical pink flowers that form a ring around the inner rim, the narrow gray band around the edge, and the gold trim.  There are also gold starbursts interspersed between the pink flowers.

This is the Manor pattern by Meito Japan.  My mom had 4 5-piece place settings, a sugar bowl with a cracked lid and a creamer with a chip on the spout.  I really think I remember more pieces, but they were probably broken though the years.

I want to use this china more often, so I thought I would see if I could acquire additional pieces.  Of course, my go-to vendor (eBay) provided me lots of options.  I opted for 4 7-piece place settings.  There are lots of serving pieces, but I can use my white serving pieces to go along with it.  That will save money and storage space.

It makes me so happy to use it.  My mother loved parties, and I know she would be glad that I am using her china.  It is a happy pattern.  I will probably use her silverware (daffodil pattern) along with it.  It would complete the retro vibe and make me wonder what meals my mom served on them.

I love all things vintage, and it is extra special when the vintage items are a part of your family history.  Do you have inherited china?  If so, do you use it regularly?

Bonus Information:  I have been thinking it would be fun to have a 1950s era dinner party.  I have the plates!  For the menu, how about:

Tomato aspic  with a side of iceburg lettuce and green goddess salad dressing

Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans

Pineapple upside down cake  with coffee

Clover rolls

Gin and tonic or a champagne cocktail

  1. Love the China. I have my mother’s as well. Another good source for replacement pieces is replacements.com.

  2. How fortuitous! We just happen to be available that night for the 1950’s party! Sounds wonderful!
