Some Like it Hot!

A hot mustard reminiscent of wasabi: Colman's.
A hot mustard reminiscent of wasabi: Colman’s.

I love the Marilyn Monroe movie, Some Like It Hot!  Which is what came to mind when I was thinking of a title for this post.

I actually want to tell you about one of my secret ingredients…and it is British, of course!

Colman’s Mustard has been around since 1814 and is By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen (of England).  If it is good enough for Elizabeth, then it’s good enough for me.

Personally, my favorite way to serve it is with a ham steak.  Just a little on the side is enough to have a small dip with every bite.  We also enjoy it with summer sausage, cheese and crackers.

If you are new to Colman’s then let me warn you, it tastes and feels like it is half mustard and half wasabi.  Too much and you will be gasping to catch your breath.

Colman’s is available prepared or as a powder. The powder only required a half and half mixture of the powder and cold water which needs to sit for 10 minutes.  I always have the powder, but for convenience I try to keep a small jar of the prepared mustard in my fridge.

A few years ago, I was having dinner at III Forks in Dallas with a man from England. When his steak arrived, he asked for Colman’s Mustard. They gladly brought some over with which he flavored his steak. I have not tried it with a steak, but it is on my to do list.

Colman’s may be available at your local grocery.  I know you can buy it on Amazon.com.  I have found it in Dallas at Central Market and Market Street.  I have also found it at stores in my town.

The Colman’s website offers recipes using their mustard:  Deviled eggs, salad dressing, gingerbread, burgers and crab cakes are just some of the uses.  I really think you will enjoy trying this British staple!
