The Decadence Exhibit

Recently, a friend and I went to the Decadence:  Fashions From the 1920s exhibition at the Galleria-Dallas.  The free, temporary exhibit is being held in tribute to the last season of PBS’s Downton Abbey.  It is well worth the trip.

The room is filled with over 30 dresses and coats along with accessories such as hats, gloves, purses, shoes, and other accouterments.  Although you can not touch the gorgeous textiles (which seem to beckon for you to do just that), you are allowed to take photos.

Designers such as Fortuny, Madeleine Vionnet, Maria Monaci Gallenga, and the Boue Sisters are among the featured couturiers.

My friend pointed out that one outfit was mislabeled.  Beside a sheer, ivory dress/night gown was marked as an, “Abergine silk satin gown with ribbon tails in self fabric.”  The purple evening gown, was actually across the room, and it was spectacular.

One display case help hats, gloves, shoes, a compact and two cardboard fans.  The fans advertised “Yum Yum Cocktail Served Here.”  With the 1920s being the era of prohibition, I can’t believe an alcoholic beverage would have been advertised.  But, I could not resist looking up a Yum Yum Cocktail recipe.  Who knows if this recipe is from the 1920s, but it sounds delicious.
