Make a Day of It

There is nothing more fun than to grab a friend and go to a neat downtown area, park the car, shop and eat.  Recently, I did just that with my sister and cousin.  We had a blast!

I want to tell you about my favorite downtown to visit and it is right here in my neighborhood…downtown Sulphur Springs.  We old timers call it the square; it used to be called Heritage Square, but now it is known as Celebration Plaza (the artist formerly known as Prince has nothing on us!).

Parking at Celebration Plaza is great.  There is some off the actual square, but much of it surrounds the beautiful, garden like plaza.  And there is plenty of it!

The plaza has a beautiful American flag waving in the center, surrounded by flowers.  From there, a perfectly manicured lawn and wide walkways lead you to seating areas, a star shaped water feature, a stately Veteran’s Memorial, the historic J. Gordon Reilly Courthouse, statues, and a little free library. Oh, but I forgot two other art pieces, which are the world famous glass bathrooms (or the see through loos, as the AARP magazine called them).  If you are inside the bathrooms, you can see out, but the outsiders can’t see in (or at least that is what we tell the visitors!).

There is a restaurant for anyone’s taste.  Cajun, sports bar, BBQ, winery, diner, pizza, German, steak house, coffee shop, sandwich shop, and don’t forget the bakery!

The shopping is fabulous!  Home décor, antiques, clothing, gifts, art, and more.

And that is just the downtown.  Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County offer so much to see and do.  It really is worth the trip.

You can find the land of milk and honey on I-30 between Dallas and Texarkana .  We are home to the World Famous Hopkins County Stew Festival, the World Famous Ice Cream Freeze Off, the Southwest Dairy Museum, the Fall Festival and the Dairy Festival.  Not to mention over 15,000 of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.

Each summer we hold the annual Independence Day Celebration the Saturday before July 4 on Celebration Plaza.  It is the living version of a Norman Rockwell painting.

So, meet me on the square in Sulphur Springs, and we will make a day of it!
