My favorite summer wardrobe item that I wear every time I wear a skirt or dress is slip shorts, also known as pettipants. Luckily, I am in a profession that allows me to forego the hose. Slip shorts keeps your legs from sticking together in the hot weather. Since I am not a fan of slips, slip shorts are a great alternative.
I wear slip shorts even when my dress is lined. It provides modesty on a windy day or when you are getting out of a sports car. Let’s face it, mishaps happen, so if you are at all concerned about showing your backside, throw on your pettipants and you are good to go!
For caftans and maxi dresses, they are absolutely perfect. Those long skirts can get hot, since they prevent any form of air circulation. Again, pettipants help to keep sweat at bay.
The added benefit of wearing slip shorts, if you are a lady who likes to wear thong underwear, is that your full skirts will not gather in your crack (not pretty!), show your hiney when the wind blows your skirt up, and your straight skirts will not have a ledge at the end of the back of your undies (equally unattractive!). Someone needs to give Kate Middleton a pair of pettipants to wear under her full skirts!
Although not readily available, you can find them on Amazon.com and Sears.com. There may be other retailers, but these were the two sites that appeared first during an online search. It seems there may only be four or five manufacturers (Underworks and Velrose are two I usually see), so your choices will be somewhat limited. They come in several lengths, two or three colors, and even a style that allows for shortening.
I had no idea these things existed until I was cleaning out my mom’s things after she passed away. She had a pair, which I loved. They were a bit nicer fabric and softer lace than what I am able to find for sale today. And the length was perfect. I was thinking I would make a new pair from silk, but somehow I have lost the originals!
So, now you know my summertime secret weapon!
