Turn Up the Turnips!

I must confess…I am not sure I had ever eaten a turnip until now. I know that I had never prepared turnips.

While at the grocery store, I got inspired to try out the beautiful vegetable. The white flesh capped with a lovely purple color is really just too pretty to eat.

On the internet, I selected a recipe called Caramelized Turnips on Allrecipes.com. I love anything caramelized so thought it would work. The addition of sugar had me concerned because I try not to add sugar to my diet.

I found turnips to be easy to work with. They peel easily and aren’t too hard to cut. I cut my pieces rather small so that they would cook quickly and be ready to serve along with the ham and beets that were already in the oven. The turnips were cooked on the stovetop for about 20 minutes.

We were pleased with the turnips. The sugar did not overly sweeten the turnips. The turnips had a nice flavor. I will definitely cook with them again. When searching for a recipe to try, I noticed that turnips can be prepared a variety of ways: boiled, roasted, mashed, sautéed, etc. My husband said he used to eat them raw.

The next time I prepare turnips I would like to roast them. That sounds like it would be yummy!
